The capital of Orne department in northwestern France. Population 28,935 (1999). 195 km west of Paris, along the Sarthe River. An old town dating back to the 8th century, it is known for its Gothic cathedral. Lace weaving, known as Point d'Alençon, which began in the mid-17th century, is popular here. The city suffered heavy damage during World War II, but after the war new industrialization, centered on machinery and electrical engineering, promoted population growth along with the improvement of administrative and commercial functions. There are many historical buildings, such as the cathedral (15th-16th century), art museum, and lace museum.
