[Implications for the Middle East]
It was after World War II that the term "Middle East" came into independent and widespread use as a regional concept. Prior to that, the terms "Near East" and "Near and Middle East," which were regional concepts created in the 19th century in the context of the development of the Eastern Question, were frequently used. The Near East and Middle East primarily referred to the territories of the Ottoman Empire and the Qajar Dynasty, and therefore corresponded to the Turkish Empire and Persia in European usage.
