A colloquial name for charred wood fossils found in coal beds. It is said to have originated in the Chikuho coalfields of Kyushu, but is widely used in coal mines throughout the country. They are usually silicified and hard. Most tree trunks are found lying on their sides, but standing trees are also found. Their occurrence is widely investigated, and the causes of their allochthonous or in situ origin are discussed. Japanese coalfields are dominated by conifers.
