A Chinese thinker from the Southern Song Dynasty. Known as Professor Enping, he was from Fujian Province. He turned his back on official appointments and lived a life of simple poverty and seclusion, but he made a great contribution by further deepening the "Taoism" he learned from Luo Yuzhang and passing it on to Zhu Xi (son). His unique theory of knowledge, which emphasizes the "realization of the Tao" (the integration of the Tao with the self) rather than the intellectual understanding of the Tao, and his training method of cultivating and nurturing one's true nature through meditation, played a decisive role in the establishment of Neo-Confucianism. "Enping Dialogues," a record of his teacher's words and deeds compiled by Zhu Xi, was widely read in Japan and Korea.

中国，南宋時代の思想家。延平先生と称せられる。福建省の人。任官にも背を向け，清貧と韜晦（とうかい）の一生を送ったが，羅予章（らよしよう）から学んだ〈道学〉をさらに深化させ，朱熹（しゆき）(子)に伝えた功績は大きい。道理の知的理解よりもその〈体認〉(道理と自己との一体化)を重視する特異な認識論や，静坐によって本性を養い育てるその修行法は，朱子学成立に決定的な役割を果たした。日本や朝鮮でも広く読まれた《延平答問》は，朱熹が編んだ師の言行録である。
