The potter's quarters of ancient Greece. Located near the entrance to the Dipylon (double gate) of the Athenian agora, this area was once home to a number of potters. Adjacent to this area is an ancient cemetery. In modern times, pottery and ceramics have come to be known collectively as ceramics (English: ceramic, German: Keramik), but the word comes from Kerameikos or Keramikos. The Kerameikos cemetery was used as a public cemetery for Athens for almost 1,000 years, from the end of the Mycenaean period in the 12th century BC to the Classical period, especially from the 6th century BC onwards.
