You-wang; Yu-wang

Japanese: 幽王 - ゆうおう（英語表記）You-wang; Yu-wang

The 12th king of the Zhou dynasty (reigned 781-771 BCE). The last king of the Western Zhou dynasty. His surname was Ji Qi or Ji Qide. He was the son of King Xuan. He favored Baozi and deposed Shen Hou's daughter, Empress Shen, and her son, Prince Yiyu, as the Empress and made Baozi the Empress and her son, Bofu, the Crown Prince. King You would send out signal fires to warn of enemy attacks and gather the feudal lords to make Baozi laugh. When Shen Hou rebelled and attacked with the Rong, the feudal lords did not gather, and King You was killed at the foot of Mount Li. He was later considered a typical example of a foolish king. Prince Yiyu became King Ping and moved east to Luoyi, so the period was called the Eastern Zhou dynasty.

中国，周第 12代の王 (在位前 781～771) 。西周最後の王。姓名は姫せい (きせい) ，姫涅 (きでつ) 。宣王の子。褒じ (ほうじ) を寵愛し，申侯の娘である正夫人の申后とその子太子宜臼 (ぎきゅう) を廃して，褒じを正夫人とし，その子伯服を太子とした。幽王は敵襲を知らせるためののろしを上げては諸侯を集めて褒じを笑わせたりしたため，申侯がそむいて犬戎とともに攻めたとき，諸侯は集らず，ついに幽王は驪 (り) 山のふもとで殺されたという。後世，愚王の典型とされる。太子宜臼は平王となり，東遷して洛邑に都をおいたので，これ以後を東周と呼んだ。
