A Shiite Islamic dynasty (905-1004) that ruled over northern Iraq and Syria. It was founded by Abu al-Khaija Abdullah of the Arab Taghlib tribe. Its capital was initially Mosul, but when Sayf ud-Daula (reigned 944-967) seized Aleppo from the Ikhsid dynasty, the kingdom split into two dynasties, the Mosulite (905-991) and the Aleppoite (945-1004). The Mosulites were defeated and subjugated by the Buyid dynasty, also Shiite, under Abu Taghlib (reigned 969-979). The Aleppoites began to advance into Asia Minor in 947 under Sayf ud-Daula, but were soon oppressed by the Byzantine army. The rulers of the two dynasties were also known as patrons of culture, and the poet Mutanabbi created his works at the court of Saif-ud-Daulah.
