This refers to plants in which flower bud formation occurs or is promoted under photoperiodic conditions in which the length of the dark period is longer than a certain time (critical dark period). Simply having a dark period longer than the light period is not effective; a certain amount of continuous dark period is required. Therefore, even if the dark period is sufficiently long, it is ineffective if the light is interrupted midway. Duckweed, goosefoot, morning glory, rice, cocklebur, chrysanthemum, cosmos, perilla, and soybean are examples of short-day plants. Short-day plants generally form flower buds when the day length shortens in nature.
