Battle of August 636 in which the Arabs defeated the Byzantines. The Arab general was Khalid ibn al-Walid. Emperor Heraclius sent a large army to counterattack the Arabs, who had conquered almost all of Syria. The Arabs, who were scattered in various places, gathered at the Yarmuk River in what is now Jordan, and fought a decisive battle. With this defeat, the Byzantines lost control of Syria forever, and the Arabs regained control of all of Syria except for a few cities.
