1861‐1932 Finnish author. He corresponded with Tolstoy for 15 years and visited Russia twice to deepen their friendship. He became a farmer, following Rousseau's call to "return to nature," and wrote works that are characteristic of an ardent Tolstoyan. His utopian thinking can be seen in his idealistic novels, such as his manifesto, My Awakening (1894), and his masterpiece, Children of the Earth Mother (1905), which questions the private ownership of land.
