Life Crampons

Japanese: ライフアイゼン
Life Crampons
1818‐88
German agricultural cooperative leader. Born in Hamm on the Sieg River, a tributary of the Rhine, as the son of a town mayor. At the age of 17, he volunteered to join the army, but was discharged in 1842 due to eye disease. He worked as a temporary employee at the Koblenz city hall, then as a district clerk in Mayen, before becoming mayor of the Bayerbusch municipality at the age of 27 in 1845. He served as mayor of towns and villages throughout the Rhineland-Palatinate until he retired in 1865 due to blindness, and thereafter devoted himself entirely to the agricultural cooperative movement. Moved by the plight of rural people suffering from the poor harvest of 1846-47, he used his own money to establish a consumer cooperative (1846) and sought to provide relief to farmers through joint grain purchases and cooperative bread-making.
