Based on the geosyncline-orogeny theory, this orogeny is said to have occurred throughout the Honshu geosyncline from the end of the Paleozoic era (late Permian) to the beginning of the Mesozoic era (early Triassic). It is interpreted that this orogeny caused the strata that had been deposited in the Honshu geosyncline from the Silurian to Permian periods of the Paleozoic era to undergo metamorphism and deformation, forming the folded mountains that formed the framework of the present-day Japanese archipelago. This orogeny was also compared to the Variscan orogeny in Europe. However, it has been revealed that a large portion of the Permian to Triassic strata in the Japanese archipelago were deposited in a conformable sequence, and that the movements associated with land formation from the end of the Permian to the beginning of the Triassic period were localized. Therefore, the Honshu orogeny can be regarded as a localized movement of the Akiyoshi orogeny in the Chichibu geosyncline. The Ryoke Metamorphic Belt and the Sanbagawa Metamorphic Belt were also considered to be part of the Honshu Orogeny during this period, but it is now known that both were metamorphosed in the Cretaceous Period. Currently, the Permian to Jurassic period is considered the Akiyoshi Orogeny, and the Cretaceous period is considered the Sagawa Orogeny, and the term Honshu Orogeny is no longer used.
