Yamazaki Highway

Japanese: 山崎街道 - やまざきかいどう

Also known as the Saigoku Kaido. This road runs from Kyoto through the foothills of the Hokusetsu mountains to Nishinomiya, where it joins the Chugoku Road (Sanyo Road), which runs from Osaka to Nishinomiya via Amagasaki. It is about 15 ri long. In ancient times, it was the most important main road, and in the early modern period, it was used as a route for feudal lords in the western provinces to travel to Edo on their alternate attendance tours. There were five post stations on this road: Yamazaki (currently Oyamazaki Town, Otokuni County, Kyoto Prefecture), Akutagawa (currently Takatsuki City, Osaka Prefecture), Koriyama (currently Ibaraki City), Segawa (currently Minoh City), and Koya (currently Itami City, Hyogo Prefecture), and honjin and wakihonjin were set up there. The Koriyama post station honjin (historic site) in particular is known as Tsubaki no Honjin.

西国街道ともいう。京都から北摂山麓を通って西宮へ出，ここで大坂から尼崎を通って西宮へ入る中国路(山陽道)に合する街道。全長15里ほどである。古代には大路として最も重視された道で，近世には西国大名の参勤交代路として利用された。山崎(現，京都府乙訓郡大山崎町)，芥川(現，大阪府高槻市)，郡山(現，茨木市)，瀬川(現，箕面市)，昆陽（こや）(現，兵庫県伊丹市)の5宿があり，本陣，脇本陣が設定された。とくに郡山宿本陣(史跡)は椿の本陣として知られている。
