Japanese: エピデンドルム（英語表記）Epidendrum

As the scientific name, which comes from Greek, suggests from the roots (epi) and tree (dendron), this is an epiphytic orchid. It is widely distributed in Central and South American countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, Brazil, and Costa Rica, and contains about 1,000 species, of which about 50 are cultivated. In Japan, E. radicans Pav. is cultivated as a cut flower, E. marie Ames, E. cochleatum L., and E. prismatocarpum Reichb.f. are seen as potted plants.

ギリシア語由来の学名，上に(epi)と木(dendron)からわかるように，着生のラン科植物。メキシコ，グアテマラ，ブラジル，コスタリカなどの中南米諸国に広く分布し，約1000種を含み，50種あまりが栽培される。日本では切花栽培しているエピデンドルム･ラディカンスE.radicans Pav.，鉢花としてのエピデンドルム･マリエE.marie Ames，エピデンドルム･コクレアトゥムE.cochleatum L.，エピデンドルム･プリスマトカルプムE.prismatocarpum Reichb.f.などをみかける。
