As the scientific name, which comes from Greek, suggests from the roots (epi) and tree (dendron), this is an epiphytic orchid. It is widely distributed in Central and South American countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, Brazil, and Costa Rica, and contains about 1,000 species, of which about 50 are cultivated. In Japan, E. radicans Pav. is cultivated as a cut flower, E. marie Ames, E. cochleatum L., and E. prismatocarpum Reichb.f. are seen as potted plants.
