Howler monkey (English spelling)

Japanese: ホエザル(吠猿) - ホエザル（英語表記）howler monkey

A general term for New World monkeys belonging to the subfamily Alouattinae of the Capuchin family of primates, which live from Central America to central and northern South America. The name comes from the loud and varied calls they make using a large resonating pouch under their lower jaw. Five species are known: the red howler monkey Alouatta seniculus (illustration), the red-handed howler monkey A. belzebul , the black howler monkey A. caraya , the brown howler monkey A. fusca , and the mantled howler monkey A. villosa .

中央アメリカから南アメリカ中･北部にかけて生息する，霊長目オマキザル科のホエザル亜科Alouattinaeに属する新世界ザルの総称。この名は，下あごの下にある大きな共鳴袋を用いて，変化に富んだ大きな声で鳴くことに由来している。アカホエザルAlouatta seniculus（イラスト），アカテホエザルA.belzebul，クロホエザルA.caraya，ブラウンホエザルA.fusca，マントホエザルA.villosaの5種が知られている。
