A volcanic island whose northern side borders the Arctic Circle, its area is 1.24 times that of Hokkaido.
[Nature]
The island is a rare above-sea manifestation of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and the Median Tectonic Zone is home to many lava-producing fissures (gjá), volcanoes, fumaroles, hot springs, and earthquakes. The land on the east and west sides of this border is moving away from each other by an average of 1 cm per year, making it a model site for the theory of ocean-floor spreading.
