...Indians in Mexico and the southwestern United States have been using peyote, made by cutting the top of the cactus and drying it, since the mid-16th century to experience the presence of God. In 1890, H. Ellis and W. Mitchell studied peyote, and in 1896, Arthur Hefter (1860-1925), a professor of pharmacology at the University of Berlin, and Louis Lewin (1850-1929), a leading researcher in psychotropic drugs, isolated the active ingredient mescaline. They took the crystals the following year, 1897, and confirmed that they experienced extremely variable, multicolored geometric patterns and visions, nausea, dizziness, and a distorted sense of time. ...
