Returning from the mountain

Japanese: 山帰り - やまがえり

The title of a Kabuki dance piece. Kiyomoto. The original title was Yamagaeri Makenukikyo. It was first performed at the Moritaza Theater in Edo in August 1823 (Bunsei 6). It is one of the five-transformation sagyo pieces Nori no Hana Sugata no Iroiro. The performer was Bando Mitsugoro III. The lyrics were written by Sakurada Jisuke II. The music was composed by Kiyomoto Saibei I. Choreography was by Fujima Daisuke. It depicts the return journey of a brave man from Edo who has made a pilgrimage to Afuriyama Oyama Ishizon Daigongen (Afuri Shrine) in Sagami, and uses props such as a wooden sword, a Bonten (a Buddhist deity), and a straw trumpet.

歌舞伎舞踊の曲名。清元。本名題《山帰強桔梗（やまがえりまけぬききよう）》。1823年(文政6)8月江戸森田座初演。五変化所作事《法花姿色同（のりのはなすがたのいろいろ）》の一曲。演者は3世坂東三津五郎。作詞2世桜田治助。作曲初世清元斎兵衛。振付藤間大助。相模の雨降（あふり）山大山（おおやま）石尊大権現(阿夫利神社)へ参詣（さんけい）した江戸の勇みの男の帰途を描いたもので，木太刀や梵天（ぼんてん），わら細工のらっぱ等の小道具を使う。
