Calvados - Calvados (English spelling) French

Also called calva, this is a brandy made in the Calvados department in Normandy, France, distilled from apple wine (cider). This region is cold and unsuitable for growing grapes, so apple wine is produced in abundance here. Calvados from the Pays d'Auge region is particularly famous and has a strong aroma. Calvados from other regions is called apple brandy. It is known in Japan as the drink of Labic, the protagonist of Remarque's "Arc de Triomphe," but in France it is not considered a luxury drink.

カルバcalvaともいい、フランス、ノルマンディー地方のカルバドス県でつくられる、りんご酒（シードル）を蒸留したブランデー。この地方は寒くてブドウの栽培に適さないため、りんご酒の生産が盛んである。カルバドスは、とくにペイ・ドージュ地区のものが有名で香気も高い。ほかの地区のものはリンゴ・ブランデーとよばれる。レマルク作『凱旋門(がいせんもん)』の主人公ラビック愛用の酒として日本では名を知られているが、フランスでは高級酒とされていない。
