An insect of the Lepidoptera family, Truncateidae. A small moth with a span of about 1cm. The larvae are pests of stored grains, dried foods, and dried fruit, living in houses and warehouses, and have been artificially transported to almost all parts of the world where they have become endemic. In the wild, the larvae parasitize mushrooms. In Europe, they also cause damage to the wine industry, as the larvae bore holes in the corks of stored wine, causing the wine to spoil. In Japan, the larvae appear from summer to autumn. [Inoue Hiroshi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
