It is also called the Inshu Domain. During the Edo period, it was a large Tozama domain that held 320,000 koku of land in both Inaba and Hoki. In the Battle of Sekigahara, most of the daimyo of Inaba and Haku were removed from their territories because they sided with the Western Army. Instead, Ikeda Nagayoshi, Yamazaki Iemori, and Kamei Korenori were assigned to Inaba, and Nakamura Tadakazu was assigned to Hoki. In 1617 (Genwa 3), Ikeda Mitsumasa, lord of Himeji Castle in Harima, was transferred to 320,000 koku of land in both Inaba and Haku, and moved to Tottori Castle. In 1632 (Kan'ei 9), Ikeda Tadakatsu, lord of Okayama Castle in Bizen, died, and three-year-old Mitsunaka took over the family, but the shogunate ordered Mitsunaka and Mitsumasa to be transferred to other territories, and Mitsunaka moved to Tottori Castle. Since then, the Ikeda clan of Mitsunaka's lineage has held the Inpaku and Haku domains for 12 generations, even up until the Meiji Restoration. The domain government was established by Mitsunaka, and his sons Nakazumi and Kiyosada were given new territorial titles and branched out into the Tottori domain in 1685 (Jokyo 2) and 1702 (Genroku 15), respectively. They called themselves Higashi-yakata and Nishi-yakata. In 1698 (Genroku 11), the tax collection law was reformed to implement the Ukemen system, but the Genbun 4th Year Rebellion (Inpaku Rebellion) of 1739 had a major impact both inside and outside the domain. The reforms of the domain government during the Horeki era included the reestablishment of the Ukemen system, the establishment of the domain school Shotokukan, and the implementation of policies for industrial and commercial development. The policy of industrial development got into full swing after the establishment of the wax shop in 1765 (Meiwa 2). Other notable domestic products were iron, cotton, and cotton wool. The reigns of the 5th lord Shigenobu and the 6th lord Harumichi were a time of cultural upsurge. At the end of the Edo period, the domain's lords were replaced one after another and the domain's administration was unstable. In 1850 (Kaei 3), Yoshinori, the fifth son of Tokugawa Nariaki of Mito, was appointed the 12th domain lord, and he carried out reforms in the domain's administration. The domain struggled to unify its views during this turbulent period until the Meiji Restoration. After the abolition of the domain, it became Tottori Prefecture, and was temporarily merged with Shimane Prefecture, but in 1881 (Meiji 14), Tottori Prefecture was re-established.
