Immersion method

Japanese: 液浸法 - えきしんほう（英語表記）immersion method

(1) A method for increasing the resolution of a microscope. The space between the objective lens and the object is filled with a liquid (usually cedar oil) whose refractive index is close to that of the lens. (2) A method for measuring the refractive index of a crystal. Several liquids with different refractive indices are prepared, and a sample immersed in one of these liquids on a glass plate is viewed under a microscope. If the refractive indices of the sample and the liquid are different, bright lines (Becke lines) appear at the boundary between them. If the refractive indices are the same, these Becke lines are not visible, so the refractive index of the sample can be determined from the refractive index of the liquid in this case.
