A city in southern Fukuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1952. It occupies a delta on the left bank of the mouth of the Chikugo River and faces the Ariake Sea. The city center developed as a castle town of the Tachibana Domain. It is part of the rice paddy area of the Tsukushi Plain, and rice, horticultural crops, and rush cultivation are thriving. Waterways run crisscrossing the city, making it known for its waterfront scenery. There is a large amount of reclaimed land along the coast, and shellfish harvesting and seafood processing are thriving, but seaweed farming is also developing. The Nishitetsu Tenjin-Omuta Line runs through the city. It is home to Yanagawa Onsen, Shotoen (a scenic spot), Tojima Clan Garden (a scenic spot), and the birthplace and memorial hall of Kitahara Hakushu. In March 2005, Yamato-cho and Mitsuhashi-cho of Yamato-gun were incorporated. 77.15 km2 .
