Fujiwara no Michikane

A nobleman in the mid-Heian period. He was the third son of Fujiwara no Kaneie, and his mother was Tokihime, daughter of Fujiwara no Nakamasa. When he saw signs that Emperor Kazan would become a monk, he and his father Kaneie encouraged the Emperor to do the same, and Emperor Ichijo (whose mother was Kaneie's daughter Senshi) ascended to the throne. Michikane followed the Emperor to Yamashina Gangyo Temple, claiming that he would also become a monk, and returned just before the Emperor did so, as detailed in the "Okagami." When the Emperor became a monk, Kaneie became regent and he himself became Kurodo no tou, and he rose to the rank of Gon Chunagon Jusanmi, surpassing seven other people. He was appointed Minister of the Interior in 991 (Shoreki 2), and Minister of the Right in 994. After the death of his father Kaneie, he succeeded his elder brother Michitaka as regent, and after Michitaka's death, he became the regent in 995 (Chōtoku 1), but died seven days after assuming the position. He is known as the Nanaka Kanpaku, Awata Kanpaku, and Nijō Kanpaku.

平安中期の公卿(くぎょう)。藤原兼家(かねいえ)の三男、母は藤原中正(なかまさ)の女(むすめ)時姫。花山(かざん)天皇に出家の兆しがみえると、父兼家とともに天皇に出家を促し、一条(いちじょう)天皇（母は兼家の女詮子(せんし)）が即位。道兼は山科元慶(やましながんぎょう)寺で自分もともに出家すると称してついて行き、天皇の出家直前に帰ってきてしまう話は『大鏡』に詳しい。天皇が出家すると、兼家は摂政(せっしょう)に、自分は蔵人頭(くろうどのとう)となり、7人を超えて権中納言従三位(ごんちゅうなごんじゅさんみ)に進んだ。991年（正暦2）内大臣、994年右大臣に任ぜられた。父兼家の死後、兄道隆(みちたか)の摂政の後を受け、道隆亡きあと、995年（長徳1）関白となったが、就任後、7日で薨(こう)じた。七日関白、粟田(あわた)関白、二条関白とよばれている。
