Inro - Inro

A type of accessory for men. It is a small container that is hung from the waist, with a string passed through both ends and fastened with an ojime (string fastener), and a netsuke (a decorative ornament) attached to the end of the string that is tucked into the obi (sash). It was named after the fact that it was originally used to carry stamps and ink. However, from around the Muromachi period, it began to be used as a container for emergency pills, and eventually in the Edo period, it came to be used simply as an accessory without any contents inside. It was customary for samurai to hang in a waist when wearing a kamishimo (formal formal kimono), but later it became common among the general public. Inro containers are usually flat rectangular containers made of three or five layers of intricate lacquer work, but there are also round, oval, box, bag, and sheath-shaped ones. Materials used include wood, bamboo, metal, ceramics, and tusk, and various craft techniques are used, including lacquer painting, makie, foil printing, vermilion, Kamakura carving, mother-of-pearl, metal engraving, inlay, wire work, and cloisonné enamel, and designs include family crests, people related to historical events, animals, plants, and landscapes. They can be said to be luxurious crafts representative of the Edo period. Well-known inro lacquer artists include those of the Koma family, such as Kyūhaku, Kyoryū, and Kansai, as well as Kajikawa Bunryūsai, Yamada Jōka, Shiomi Masanari, Iizuka Momoha, Ogata Kōrin, Ogawa Harittsu (Kasao), Tsuishū Yosei, and Somada Mitsumasa, and they all created unique inro.

男性用装身具の一種。腰下げ用の小型容器で、その左右両端に紐(ひも)を通して緒締(おじめ)で留め、紐の先端についている根付(ねつけ)を帯に挟んで下げる。初め印判や印肉を収めて携帯するものであったところから、この名がある。しかし、室町時代ごろからは、応急用の丸薬(がんやく)入れなどに用いられるようになり、やがて江戸時代になると、中身は入れずに、単なるアクセサリーとして用いられるようになった。武家は裃(かみしも)を着用した際には、かならず腰に下げるのを習わしとしたが、のちには広く一般の人たちにも行われるようになった。印籠の容器は、普通、精巧な漆(うるし)細工でできた三つ重ね、あるいは五つ重ねの長方形の扁平なものが多いが、なかには、丸形、楕円(だえん)形、箱形、袋形、鞘(さや)形のものなどもある。材質は、木竹、金属、陶磁、牙角(がかく)などが用いられ、これに漆絵(うるしえ)、蒔絵(まきえ)、箔押(はくお)し、堆朱(ついしゅ)、鎌倉彫、螺鈿(らでん)、彫金(ちょうきん)、象眼(ぞうがん)、針金細工、七宝焼(しっぽうやき)などといった各種工芸技術が駆使されており、これに、定紋(じょうもん)、故実に関係のある人物、動植物、風景などの模様が施されている。江戸時代を代表するぜいたくな工芸品といえる。印籠蒔絵師としては、休伯、巨柳、寛哉(かんさい)といった古満(こま)家の人々をはじめ、梶川(かじかわ)文竜斎、山田常嘉(じょうか)、塩見政誠(まさなり)、飯塚桃葉、尾形光琳(こうりん)、小川破笠(はりつ)（笠翁）、堆朱楊成(ついしゅようぜい)、杣田光正(そまだみつまさ)らが知られ、異色ある印籠がつくられている。
