A military commander in the Azuchi-Momoyama period. He was the eldest son of Nobunaga. His childhood name was Kimyo, and he was called Kankuro. In 1572 (Genki 3), he made his debut in northern Omi, attacking Azai Nagamasa, and in 1574 he attacked the Nagashima Ikko Ikki, and participated in the Battle of Nagashino in 1575. He was appointed Dewa-no-suke and Akita Castle Suke. In November 1575, Nobunaga handed him the family headship, and he ruled over Owari (Aichi Prefecture) and Mino (Gifu Prefecture), becoming the lord of Gifu Castle. In 1577, he defeated the Saika clan, and was promoted to Junior Third Rank and Vice-Captain of the Left Guard for defeating Matsunaga Hisahide. He participated in the siege of Harima, the Ishiyama War, and the siege of Arioka Castle. In 82, he was a distinguished vanguard in the attack on Takeda Katsuyori in Kai. When the Takeda clan was defeated, he burned Kaisen Joki and others at Erin-ji Temple to death. He then went to Kyoto to attack Mori in the Chugoku region, and while staying at Myokaku-ji Temple, he was hit by the Honno-ji Incident. He took refuge in the Nijo Palace and fought against Akechi Mitsuhide's army, then committed suicide. Nobutada's son Sanboshi (later Hidenobu) inherited the Oda clan, but was demoted after the Battle of Sekigahara. His posthumous name was Daiun-in-den Sengan Daizenjomon. He was buried at Sogen-in Temple in Daitoku-ji Temple. [Osamu Wakita] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
