A former town in Date County in northeastern Fukushima Prefecture. Cultivated land spreads across the Abukuma River basin at the northeastern edge of the Fukushima Basin. The main settlement developed as a small castle town in the valley of the Hirose River, and the silkworm egg industry was once thriving. Commerce and industry are active, with many knitwear factories. Fruit cultivation and livestock farming are carried out, and dried persimmons, peaches, and cucumbers are local specialties. The Abukuma Express runs through the town. In January 2006, it merged with Date Town, Hobara Town, Reizan Town, and Tsukidate Town in Date County to become a city, Date City. Area: 82.93 km2 . 福島県北東部,伊達(だて)郡の旧町。福島盆地北東端にある阿武隈(あぶくま)川流域に耕地が広がる。広瀬川の谷に主集落は小城下町として発達,かつて蚕種業が盛んであった。商工業が活発で,ニット工場が多い。果実栽培,畜産が行われ,干しガキ,モモ,キュウリを特産。阿武隈急行が通じる。2006年1月,伊達郡伊達町,保原町,霊山町,月舘町と合併し市制,伊達市となる。82.93km2。2万1415人(2003)。
