Yamagata Shinkansen

Yamagata Shinkansen

The Yamagata Shinkansen is the common name for the 148.6 km JR line between Fukushima and Shinjo (Yamagata Prefecture) on which the Tsubasa express train, a so-called mini-shinkansen, runs, with a gauge of 1,435 mm. It is operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East Japan). In terms of line name, it belongs to the conventional Ou Main Line. The Yamagata Shinkansen was the first section of Japan to be converted into a mini-shinkansen. Construction began in August 1988, and the Fukushima-Yamagata section opened on July 1, 1992. The gauge of this section was changed from 1,067 mm to 1,435 mm, and conventional trains could no longer run on it, but local trains have been modified to fit the new gauge and continue to operate. Next, a plan to widen the gauge and extend the Shinkansen service between Yamagata and Shinjo (61.5 km) was agreed upon between JR and Yamagata Prefecture in 1997, construction began in October 1998, and the service opened on December 4, 1999. The "Tsubasa" express train that runs directly between Tokyo and Yamagata/Shinjo is a 7-car train made of E3 series cars, and is mostly coupled with the "Yamabiko" express train to Fukushima on the Tohoku Shinkansen, but runs alone on the Ou Main Line. The maximum speed on this section is limited to 130 km per hour, but the fastest "Tsubasa" train can cover the distance between Tokyo and Yamagata in 2 hours 26 minutes and between Tokyo and Shinjo in 3 hours 11 minutes.
