Andesite Line - Andesite Line

The boundary line of andesite surrounding the Pacific Ocean. It was proposed in 1912 by New Zealand geologist Marshall P. Marshall. Typical calc-alkaline andesite is not distributed inside this line, while calc-alkaline andesite, which is characteristic of orogenic belts and island arcs, is distributed outside it. The boundary line runs parallel to the west coast of North and South America, passing through the Aleutian Islands, the Kuril Islands, the Japanese Archipelago, the Mariana Islands, Palau, Bismarck, Fiji, and Tonga Islands, and finally to New Zealand. It is thought to represent the boundary between oceanic crust and continental crust, but there are many unknowns about its exact location. It is sometimes called the Marshall Line after its proposer.

太平洋を取り巻いている安山岩分布の境界線。1912年にニュージーランドの地質学者マーシャルP. Marshallによって提唱されたもので、この線の内側には典型的なカルク・アルカリ岩系の安山岩は分布しないで、外側には造山帯、島弧などに特有なカルク・アルカリ岩系の安山岩類が分布する。境界線はおよそ南北アメリカの西海岸に平行にアリューシャン列島、千島列島、日本列島、マリアナ、パラオ、ビスマーク、フィジー、トンガの各諸島周辺を通って、ニュージーランドに至る。海洋性地殻と大陸性地殻の境界を意味するものと考えられるが、正確な位置については不明の点も多い。提唱者にちなんでマーシャル線とよばれることもある。
