1884‐1964 A Turkish female writer. Born in Istanbul, she graduated from an American girls' school. She began writing around 1908, and after World War I she devoted herself to political activities, contributing to women's liberation. She spent a long time abroad, including in England and France, and after returning to Japan she served as a professor of English literature at Istanbul University. Her work is heavily influenced by British novels. In addition to her signature work, The General Store with Flies, she has written numerous novels, critiques, travelogues, and reportage.
