A Turkish female writer. Born in Istanbul, she graduated from an American girls' school. She began writing around 1908, and after World War I she devoted herself to political activities, contributing to women's liberation. She spent a long time abroad, including in England and France, and after returning to Japan she served as a professor of English literature at Istanbul University. Her work is heavily influenced by British novels. In addition to her signature work, The General Store with Flies, she has written numerous novels, critiques, travelogues, and reportage. トルコの女流作家。イスタンブールに生まれ，アメリカ系女学校を卒業。1908年ころから文筆生活に入り，第1次世界大戦後は政治活動に身を投じ，婦人解放に貢献した。イギリス，フランスなど国外での生活が長く，帰国後イスタンブール大学の英文学教授を務めた。その作品にはイギリス小説の影響が強い。代表作《ハエのいる雑貨屋》のほか多数の小説，評論，紀行文，ルポルタージュがある。【小山皓一郎】
