Born: June 22, 1898 in Osnabrück
[Died] September 25, 1970, Locarno German novelist. Served in the First World War, and after being discharged he worked in a variety of jobs until he published his novel All Quiet on the Western Front (Im Westen nichts Neues) in 1929. This novel, which uses slang to realistically portray the cruelty of war, was translated into 25 languages ​​within 18 months and became a huge bestseller, selling 3.5 million copies. In 1931 he published the sequel Der Weg zurück (The Way Home). In 1932 he went into exile in Switzerland, but the following year the Nazis stripped him of his citizenship and banned his books. In 1939 he emigrated to the United States. After the war novel Drei Kameraden (1938), he published Liebe deinen Nächsten (Love Thy Neighbor) (41), which deals with the fate of refugees, and Arc de Triomphe (Arc de Triomphe) (46), the latter of which again became a best-seller, selling two million copies. In 1947 he became an American citizen. His subsequent works include Der Funke Leben (The Spark of Life) (52), Zeit zu leben und Zeit zu sterben (A Time to Love and a Time to Die) (54), Der schwarze Obelisk (The Black Obelisk) (56), and Die Nacht von Lissabon (A Night in Lisbon) (63). His posthumous work is Schatten im Paradies (71).
