Yatsushiro Plain - Yatsushiro Heiya

The southern half of the Kumamoto Plain is surrounded by the southwestern part of Kumamoto Prefecture, the Uto Peninsula, the Toyoda Bunka Mountains, the northern part of the Kyushu Mountains, and the Yatsushiro Sea. This plain, consisting of a complex delta of the Sunagawa River, Hi River, Kagami River, and Kuma River, which flow into the Yatsushiro Sea perpendicular to the Hinagu Fault Cliff, and the reclaimed land to the west, is one of the prefecture's leading double-cropping areas. The combination of paddy rice and rush cultivation is well-known, but there are widespread areas with water shortages, and many low-lying marshes below sea level are found in the reclaimed land facing the Yatsushiro Sea, so in terms of unit yield, both crops are the lowest in the prefecture. In addition, the implementation of a rice production reduction policy since the late 1960s and the rising cost of fuel for drying rush have brought about changes in land use, and the reclaimed land on the coast is used for greenhouse cultivation of prince melons, tomatoes, and cucumbers.

熊本県南西部、宇土(うと)半島、豊田(とよた)分丘山地、九州山地北部ならびに八代海に囲まれた熊本平野の南半域。日奈久(ひなぐ)断層崖(がい)と直交するような形状で八代海に流れ込む砂川、氷(ひ)川、鏡川、球磨(くま)川などの複合三角州と、その西の干拓地とからなるこの平野は、県下でも有数の二毛作田地帯である。水稲とイグサ栽培との組合せは有名であるが、用水不足地域が広く分布し、また八代海に臨んでいる干拓地では海面下の低湿地帯が多くみられるため、単位収量的には両作物ともに県下最低の地位にある。また、昭和40年代末からの米の減反政策の実施、イグサ乾燥燃料の高騰などが土地利用に変化をもたらしてきており、海岸部干拓地はプリンスメロン、トマト、キュウリの施設園芸栽培に利用されている。
