Yatsushiro-sho

Japanese:
Yatsushiro-sho
A manor in Yatsushiro County, Kai Province. It is believed to have been established in the area of Yatsushiro-go, Yatsushiro County, which is mentioned in the Wamyō Ruijūshō. The area of the manor is unknown, but it is probably the area centered around Kumano Shrine, located north of Yatsushiro-machi, Higashi-Yatsushiro County, Yamanashi Prefecture (now Fuefuki City). It was issued by Kai no Kami Fujiwara Akito during the Kyuan era (1145-1151) and donated to the Kii Kumano Sanzan Hongu Shrine for the purpose of holding lectures. Two or three years later, it was officially established with a letter from Toba-incho. There is also a theory that the development was involved with the Yatsushiro clan, a branch of the Kai Genji clan, and Hemmi Kiyomitsu's son Nobukiyo was called Yatsushiro Yoichi. In 1162, Fujiwara Tadashige, who became Kai no Kami, ordered the abolition of the newly established manor and dispatched Nakahara Kiyohiro, the deputy governor, to Kai Province. Kiyohiro broke into the manor together with the local government official Saegusa Morimasa and others, seizing the annual tax, taking away the boji, and arresting the deity. In response to a complaint from Kumano Shrine, the Imperial Court ordered Tadashige to return the lost property, but Tadashige, Kiyohiro, and Morimasa all denied the charges. This lawsuit led to the review of the Chokan Kanbun, which discussed whether Kumano Gongen was the same as the deity worshipped at Ise Grand Shrine, as Nakahara Gyorin, a doctor of law who was ordered to review the charges against Tadashige and others, based on the Honji Suijaku theory that Kumano Gongen was the same as the deity worshipped at Ise Grand Shrine. In the end, the theory that they were not the same seemed to prevail, and Tadashige was exiled to Iyo Province. This incident of the suspension and abolition of the manor led to the decline of the Saegusa clan, a clan that had existed since ancient times, and the power of the Kai Genji Yashiro clan grew. It seems that the Yatsushiro Manor was inherited by the Ogasawara clan after the Yatsushiro Nobumasa, and in 1383 it was passed on from Ogasawara Nagamoto to his son Nagahide via Ama Jōkei, and became the hereditary property of the Ogasawara clan, the guardian of Kai.
