An evergreen shrub (illustration) of the Araliaceae family. It branches sparsely and is widely planted as a garden tree or potted plant, growing well in the shade or in places with severe air pollution. It grows to a height of 2-3m, with long, alternate leaves at the end of the trunk, palmately divided into 7-9 lobes, thick, smooth, and dark green in colour. In November, the spherical umbels gather together to form a large (20-40cm long) panicle. The ovary is inferior, with 5 petals and stamens, and 5 stigmas. The 5-lobed fruit matures to a purple-black colour in April-May of the following year, and each fruit contains 5 seeds.

ウコギ科の株立ちになる常緑低木（イラスト）。まばらに枝を出し，庭木や鉢植えに広く植栽され，日陰や大気汚染の激しいところでもよく育つ。高さ2～3mになり，葉は幹の先に束生状に互生して長柄があり，葉身は掌状に7～9裂して，厚く滑沢があり，濃緑色。11月に球状になった散形花序が集まり，大きな(長さ20～40cm)円錐花序をつくる。花弁とおしべは5個，柱頭も5本で，子房下位。5室からなる果実は翌年の4～5月に紫黒色に成熟し，1果に種子を5個入れる。
