...It was Desormeaux who coined the term endoscope. Later, in 1868, Adorf Kussmaul (1822-1902), a German physician, succeeded in getting a glimpse of the inside of the stomach using this lamp and a 47 cm long metal tube. Attempts to illuminate the inside of the body for observation and treatment progressed rapidly in the second half of the 19th century, particularly in areas close to the surface of the body.
