A former town in Fujitsu District, southern Saga Prefecture. Rice and wheat are cultivated in the lowlands along the Shiota River, which flows east through the center of the prefecture, and tea and citrus fruits are cultivated in the surrounding hills. The main settlement has long been a key location for water transportation along the Shiota River, where clay raw materials from Amakusa are unloaded, crushed, and sent to the Arita pottery industry and other areas. 佐賀県南部,藤津郡の旧町。中部を東流する塩田川沿いの低地で米や麦,周辺丘陵で茶と柑橘(かんきつ)類を栽培する。主集落は古くから塩田川水運の要地で,天草産の陶土原料を陸揚げし,砕石して有田窯業地などに送っている。2006年1月,藤津郡嬉野町と合併し市制,嬉野市となる。46.05km2。1万2065人(2003)。
