New Kumano Shrine - Imakumanosha

New Kumano Shrine - Imakumanosha
The shrine is located in Imakumano Kananomori-cho, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto City. The origins of this shrine date back to 1160 (Eireki 1), when Emperor Goshirakawa, who had a deep faith in Kumano Gongen from Kishu, enshrined the Kumano Sansho Gongen near his Imperial Palace, Hojujidono, in the eastern part of Kyoto, and named it Shin-Kumano. The Miidera monk Kakusan, who often served as a guide for Kumano Imperial pilgrimages, inherited the position of Kumano Sanzan Kengyo, which had been selected for generations since the temple's founder, Zoyo, and also served as the Kengyo of this shrine, which led to remarkable prosperity. The head priest who managed this shrine was Shosen-in (later renamed Jushin-in), and from the Muromachi period onwards, he served as the Inge guide of Shogo-in, the head temple of the Shugendo Honzan school, and governed many Kasumishita and Dogyo in various provinces.
