1823‐93 A modern Egyptian technical and administrative official. Born in Dakahriya Governorate in Lower Egypt, he attended a technical school in Cairo before going to France in 1844 to study artillery, returning to Egypt in 1850. He was selected to oversee the construction of the Hayriyya Canal when Ismail Pasha ascended to the throne, and also held administrative posts in the Ministry of Railways and the Ministry of Waqf. He also showed enthusiasm for educational reform, building the National Library (Dar al-Qutb) and establishing the Normal School (Dar al-Uloom) in 1872.
