...They parasitize the kidney sacs of squids and octopuses. Since their first discovery in 1868, 18 species of Orthopods have been known from the Mediterranean, North Atlantic, and the West Coast of the United States. In Japan, they were first discovered in 1976 in Akkeshi, Hokkaido, parasitizing the body of a planarian, and were reported in 1979 as Ciliocincta akkeshiensis (illustration). Their bodies are elongated and cylindrical, with males measuring about 0.1 mm and females 0.2 to 0.3 mm.
