A lake located about 120 km north of Lhasa in central Tibet Autonomous Region, China. In Tibetan it means "heavenly lake." In Mongolian it is called Tengri Sea. It is the largest inland lake in Tibet, has no drainage river, and is the second largest saltwater lake in China after Koko Nor (Qinghai Lake). It has an area of 1,940 km2 and a lake surface elevation of 4,718 m. To the north lies the undulating Qiangtang Plateau, and to the south lies the main peak of the glacier-capped Nyenchentangla Mountains. 中国,チベット自治区中部,ラサの北方約120kmにある湖。チベット語で〈天の湖〉の意。モンゴル語でテングリ(騰格里)海という。チベット最大の内陸湖で,排水河川をもたず,ココ・ノール(青海湖)につぐ中国第2の塩水湖。面積1940km2,湖面は標高4718m。北側には起伏のあるチャンタン(羌塘)高原がひろがり,南側には氷河をいただくニエンチェンタンラ(念青唐古拉)山脈の主峰がそびえる。古来,チベット人の聖地の一つであり,信仰の対象とされてきた。
