Located in Nishimatsuejomachi, Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Former Kanpei-chusha Shrine. The main deity is Prince Kanenaga (Kaneyoshi), son of Emperor Godaigo, and Prince Yoshinari, son of Emperor Gomurakami, is enshrined as a secondary deity. Both princes went to Kyushu as Shogun-gu (shogunate officials) during the Nanboku-cho period, and died there after playing a major role in supporting the Southern Court. In the early Meiji period, as there was a growing momentum to enshrine people who had contributed to the Kenmu Restoration, a shrine was founded in 1884 (Meiji 17) at the current site of Prince Kanenaga's castle, at the request of local residents, and a ceremony to enshrine it was held. The annual festival is held on August 3rd. [Takafusa Hiraizumi] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
