Shozo Uchida - Uchida Yoshikazu

Born: February 23, 1885 in Tokyo
[Died] December 14, 1972. Tokyo architect and structural engineer. Graduated from the Department of Architecture at Tokyo Imperial University (1907). Worked for a time at Mitsubishi Limited Partnership Company (now Mitsubishi Estate), but returned to the university in 1910, where he followed in the footsteps of his teacher, Toshiki Sano, in systematizing structural engineering. He later served as professor (21-43), president (43-45), and professor emeritus. After the Great Kanto Earthquake, he designed the reconstruction of the Yasuda Auditorium and other buildings at Tokyo Imperial University. He is considered the father of structural engineering in Japan. His research fields included fire protection for homes, building regulations, and urban planning, and he contributed to laying the foundations for many fields. As an architect, he designed the Tokorozawa Airship Hangar (12), the Shanghai Institute of Natural Sciences (30), and the former main building of First Higher School (33). He became a member of the Japan Academy in 1957, and was awarded the Order of Culture in 1972.

建築家，建築構造学者。東京帝国大学建築学科卒業 (1907) 。三菱合資会社 (現三菱地所) に一時勤めるが，1910年に大学に戻り，師佐野利器の跡を継いで建築構造学の体系化につとめ，のち教授 (21～43) ，総長 (43～45) ，名誉教授を歴任。関東大震災後に安田講堂をはじめ東京帝国大学の諸建物の再建の設計を行なった。日本の建築構造学の父とされる。研究分野は家屋防火，建築法規，都市計画に及び，諸分野の基礎づくりにも貢献。建築家としては所沢飛行船格納庫 (12) ，上海自然科学研究所 (30) ，旧一高本館 (33) などの設計がある。 57年日本学士院会員，72年文化勲章受章。
