Interlude Kyogen

Japanese:
Interlude Kyogen

The part of Noh that is handled by the Kyogen actors. The role is called Ai. They can be broadly divided into Katariai, Ashiraiai, and Gekiai. The most common Igatari is when the Shite appears as a guest during the intermission and, at the request of the Waki, sits down to talk about the theme of the piece or related topics. In contrast, Tachitari is when the deity of a subordinate shrine speaks about the origins of the shrine or temple while standing. Tachitari also includes Hayauchiai, which announces the urgency of an emergency, and Kuchiakeai, which starts the Noh with the Ai's narration. Ashirai has a deep theatrical relationship with the Shite and Waki. Gekiai is a skit in which multiple Ai appear and perform among themselves in Noh, without any connection to other Noh roles. Also, special performances that are different from the usual are called "Kaei". Although most Ai are low-ranking roles such as the tokoro no monono (a person who plays a role in a play), tachimochi (a sword bearer), nori-ki (a person who plays a role in a play ...
