Yoshimori Wada

A military commander in the early Kamakura period. He was the first head of the Samurai-dokoro (military office) of the Kamakura Shogunate. He was the eldest son of Yoshimune and the grandson of Miura Daisuke Yoshiaki. His base was Wada in Sagami (Miura City, Kanagawa Prefecture). When Yoritomo raised his army in 1180 (Jisho 4), he lent a lot of support to him along with his uncle Miura Yoshizumi and others, and in the same year, he was appointed head of the Samurai-dokoro (military office) when it was established. He later played an active role in the pursuit of the Taira clan and the conquest of the Oshu Fujiwara clan in 1189 (Bun'ji 5). During the reign of Yoriie, when the decision on lawsuits was made by a council of 13 senior vassals, he participated as one of the genro (elder statesmen). In 1203 (Kennin 3), during the Hiki Rebellion, he sided with Hojo Tokimasa and killed him, and when he was ordered by Shogun Yoriie to hunt down Tokimasa, he sided with the Hojo clan, rejected Yoriie, and supported Sanetomo as the third Shogun. However, in 1213 (Kenpo 1), he was outraged by the way Hojo Yoshitoki punished his son and nephew who had participated in the incident to expel the Hojo clan, so he raised an army, but it was to no avail, and the Wada clan was destroyed on May 3rd.

鎌倉初期の武将。鎌倉幕府初代の侍所別当(さむらいどころべっとう)。義宗(よしむね)の長子で三浦大介義明(みうらおおすけよしあき)の孫。根拠地は相模(さがみ)（神奈川県三浦市）和田。1180年（治承4）頼朝(よりとも)挙兵に際し、叔父の三浦義澄(よしずみ)らとともに大いにこれを助け、同年侍所創設と同時に別当（長官）に任じた。のち平家追討や89年（文治5）の奥州藤原氏征討などにも活躍。訴訟の裁決が重臣13名による合議制となった頼家(よりいえ)の代には、元老の1人として参加した。1203年（建仁3）比企(ひき)氏の乱では北条時政(ときまさ)に加担してこれを討ち、同じく将軍頼家から時政の追討を命じられたとき、北条氏に通じて頼家を退け、実朝(さねとも)を3代将軍に擁立した。しかし13年（建保1）北条氏排斥事件に加わった息子と甥(おい)に対する北条義時の処罰の仕方を憤って挙兵したが利なく、5月3日和田氏は滅亡した。
