Orang means people and Laut means sea, and is a general Malay term for people who live on the water or are sea nomads. Well-known people include the Moken (or Selong) of the Bay Islands, the Bajau on the north coast of Borneo, and the Samar of the Sulu Islands. They make their living by fishing and collecting marine resources, and live a life of moving on the water. They traded marine products for crops and fishing gear from people living on land, and sometimes became pirates to steal property. In recent years, there has been a trend for them to become permanent residents, building pile dwellings on the sea near land.
