The term refers to the larvae of silkworms immediately after hatching. They are also called hairy silkworms because their bodies are black and densely covered with hair. The first to hatch from silkworm eggs are called running silkworms. There are around 2,300 silkworms per gram, with fewer in European species and more in Chinese species. If the temperature at which the silkworms are kept is high, the color of the silkworms will become redder.
