...There are views on this issue, including those that interpret it as an Asian form of slave society (a less developed form than the slave society of classical antiquity), and those that consider it a separate and independent mode of production on the same level as the "classical antiquity," "feudal," and "modern bourgeois" modes of production, and there is still no consensus. Furthermore, there is a conflict between the single-lineage theory, which holds that these stages of development are stages that all peoples must pass through in principle, and the multi-lineage theory, which holds that although from a macroscopic perspective these are irreversible progressive stages, under certain conditions, especially under the influence of advanced civilizations, it is possible for people to skip one or even two stages, and that many peoples have actually achieved such development. The majority of academic circles around the world today appear to be beginning to regard the latter view as appropriate.
