Japanese: ヤツシロガイ(八代貝) - ヤツシロガイ（英語表記）Tonna luteostoma

A gastropod shell of the family Columbidae (illustration). It is so named because it is often found in the Yatsushiro Sea. The shell is large, somewhat thin and spherical, reaching a height of 19 cm and a diameter of 16 cm. It has seven low layers, each of which is bulging, and the last layer is very large and accounts for most of the shell's height. The surface of the shell has low, wide ribs with narrow spaces between them. Some ribs have alternating dark brown and yellowish-white spots on them, while others have less clearly defined spots. In some regions, it is called Yamadorigai due to this pattern. The shell opening is wide and rounded, and the outer edge is curved to match the ribs on the shell surface.

ヤツシロガイ科の巻貝（イラスト）。八代海でよくとれたというのでこの名がある。殻はやや薄く球形の大型で高さ19cm，径16cmに達する。巻きは低く7層，各層は膨らみ，最後の巻きは非常に大きく殻高の大部分を占める。殻表には低くて幅の広い肋があり，肋の間は狭い。肋上に濃褐色と黄白色の斑が交互にならぶ肋と，斑の明りょうでない肋とがある。この模様からヤマドリガイという地方もある。殻口は広くて円く，外縁は殻表の肋に応じて屈曲する。
