A left-wing political party formed in Western Canada in the 1930s. It was founded on August 1, 1932, in Calgary, Alberta, by farmers, laborers, and socialists, as well as the railway union. Its leaders were JS Woodsworth and others, and they sought to democratically transform the capitalist economy into a "cooperative system." The party's platform was set out in the Regina Manifesto, adopted at the first party convention held the following summer, and according to it, the Cooperative Federalist Party was founded on socialist principles, and aimed to promote the nationalization of banks and other financial institutions, transportation and communications, and natural resources, as well as a planned economy. In the 1930s, the party expanded its influence in Western Canada from British Columbia to Manitoba, and in 1944 it came to power in Saskatchewan. Although it declined in other provinces, it continued to win in Saskatchewan until 1960, when it dissolved into the New Democratic Party in 1961.
