A gastropod shell of the family Ploceidae (illustration). It is named after the hermit crab that lives inside the dead shell and walks around with the shell attached. The shell is thin and tapered towards the tip, about 4 cm long and 1.4 cm wide. Many of the shells have up to 17 stories. The surface of the shell is covered with small, regularly spaced ribs with small grains, and also has brown lines and spots. The shell opening is small, with a short, open water tube groove protruding downward. The lid is oval and pale yellow. It is widely distributed in the temperate and tropical Pacific to Indian Oceans south of Honshu, and is often found on fine sandy bottoms from the intertidal zone to a depth of 20 m.

カニモリガイ科の巻貝（イラスト）。その死殻にヤドカリが入っていて，殻をつけて歩いているのでこの名がある。殻は細くて，先端のほうへとがり，長さ4cm，太さ1.4cmくらい。巻きは多く17階にも及ぶ。殻の表面には小さいつぶつぶのある規則正しく上下に並ぶ肋をめぐらし，また褐色の線や斑がある。殻口は小さくて，下方に短くて開いた水管溝が突き出ている。ふたは卵形で薄く黄色。本州以南の温･熱帯の太平洋～インド洋に広く分布し，潮間帯から水深20mの細砂底に多い。
